No fewer than 17 soldiers of the Nigerien National Gendarmerie have been reportedly murdered by fighters of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, EIGS.
The tragic occurrence occurred on Wednesday, according to security expert Zagazola Makama, who broke the news in a report on his official X account.

He said that the casualties were caused by an attack on a security post in Garbougna, which is situated along the Terra–Niamey axis.
Makama reported, citing credible sources, that the attack featured heavily armed terrorists who overran the gendarmerie position using a combination of direct fire, homemade explosives, and manoeuvring techniques.

According to the preliminary casualty report, one of the 17 soldiers killed was a captain and a team leader.
According to reports, over 34 others suffered severe injuries.
The security expert also disclosed that the armed men destroyed many operating vehicles.
“They also seized military equipment and weapons before withdrawing from the location.

“Reinforcement teams were deployed to the area shortly after the incident, while aerial surveillance was activated to track the fleeing assailants”, he added.
