The Turaki-led faction of Peoples Democratic Party has announced plans to hold a Special National Convention on Saturday to formally endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The convention will begin at 10 a.m. at the A Class Event Center on Kassim Ibrahim Way, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Ini Ememobong, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, and Theophilus Dakas Shan, the National Organising Secretary, signed the invitation, which PUNCH Online obtained on Thursday.

The invitation further described the gathering as a “Special National Convention for the Ratification of the Nomination of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR as the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party.”

Meanwhile, the Kabiru Turaki-led faction is positioning Jonathan as its flag-bearer through a series of steps that it will follow at Saturday’s convention.

In addition, the faction’s screening committee cleared Jonathan as its sole presidential candidate and granted him a waiver on May 19.

According to former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, who chaired the screening committee, the party issued the waiver based on Jonathan’s political experience as deputy governor, governor, vice president, and president.

BACKSTORY…

The group held its presidential primary on Wednesday, May 28, ahead of the ratification process scheduled for Saturday.

In addition, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled on Tuesday that Jonathan is qualified to contest the 2027 presidential election, and the Turaki-led group welcomed the decision.

According to Justice Peter Lifu, the plaintiff who tried to stop Jonathan from running lacked the legal standing to file the suit because the former president’s alleged plan to contest had not injured him.

As of the time of filing this report, Jonathan was yet to make any public statement accepting the nomination.

However, the former president has yet to publicly accept the nomination or confirm his intention to contest.
