32 states endorse State Police, four pending

The push for State Police in Nigeria gained massive momentum as 32 out of 36 states approved the State Police Bill.

This surge became clear on Wednesday as additional State Houses of Assembly transmitted their official approvals to the National Assembly.

According to DAILY POST, only four states have yet to adopt the constitutional amendment permitting state police creation, bringing total approvals to 32 states.

This milestone easily surpasses the constitutional requirement of two-thirds, or 24 state assemblies, needed to pass the amendment.

Following state legislative approval, the constitutional amendment bill advances to the next stage of the amendment process before reaching the president for final assent.

While advocates maintain that state police forces will strengthen responses to kidnapping, banditry, and widespread insecurity, critics caution that state governors could weaponize the force against political opponents.

Below are the 32 approving states and the four pending states:

Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara states.

While the four pending states are; Bauchi, Borno, Katsina, and Niger.

Backstory…

Just few days ago, Twenty-four State Houses of Assembly had approved the proposed state police amendment bill to establish a dual policing system in Nigeria, reaching the required two-thirds threshold for constitutional modification.

Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the State Police Bill, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, October 23, 2026.Find Police Jobs

The statement confirmed that 24 of Nigeria’s 36 state assemblies ratified the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which authorizes the creation of a parallel policing framework.

The proposed amendment will provide constitutional backing to the policing framework outlined in the Presidential Working Group’s draft National Policing Bill, 2026.Find Police Jobs
