Tragic Abuja Building Collapse Leaves 6 Workers Injured, Sparks Safety Concerns

Six persons were injured after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja municipal area council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It was gathered that the building collapsed at about 11 am while workers were on-site, prompting an emergency response from relevant agencies.

The FCT emergency management department’s (FEMD) chief of public affairs, Nkechi Isa, said in a statement that rescue efforts are continuing to make sure no one is still trapped under the debris.

According to FEMD, 17 workers were on the upper floor of the structure at the time of the incident.

“Rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure no person is trapped in the rubble of a collapsed two-storey building in Jikwoyi, Abuja Municipal Area Council of the FCT,” the statement reads.

“FEMD search and rescue team says that 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it collapsed, injuring five workers and trapping a lone male who was at the ground level of the building.”

According to the FEMD, the rescued and injured workers were sent to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi, where they are reportedly receiving care.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Federal Fire Service (FFS), the FCT police command, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the department of development control, the engineering department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), and the FCT emergency management department are among the emergency responders on the scene.

The FEMD said excavation at the site was “still ongoing until ground zero to ensure that no person is trapped in the rubble.”

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a fire outbreak engulfed part of a car sales and service centre along the Kubwa expressway of Bwari area council.

According to the statement, the incident happened on Friday at around midday at the Earloha Chery Center, which is situated at Arab Junction in Kubwa.

Adie added that when initial attempts to put out the fire with extinguishers failed, center employees allegedly relocated cars off the property.

He claimed that records and equipment were destroyed in the fire, and a portion of the structure was totally destroyed.
