A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the relocation of the Benue LG Petition Tribunal and Appeals to Abuja. This decision follows a lawsuit filed by the All Progressive Congress (APC) and other parties.
The Benue State APC Chairman, Augustine Agada, publicity secretary Daniel Ihomun, and the party itself submitted a motion ex parte through their counsel, Anderson Asemota, on March 11, 2025, before Justice M.M Adamu requesting the tribunal’s relocation to Abuja.
The defendants in the case include the chairman of the Benue State Local Government Election Petition Tribunal for zones A, B, and – Justices Ityouyimem, D.E Igho, M.M Odinya along with 15 others.
The Benue State LG Election Petition Tribunal was previously relocated from Makurdi to NBA House, Abuja by the Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpembese due to security concerns.
However, an attempt to hold the tribunal’s sitting in Makurdi was halted by a restraining order from the Federal High Court in Makurdi preventing its relocation there.
In response, the APC approached the FCT High Court in Abuja, requesting that the tribunal panel remain in Abuja, as initially ordered by the Benue Chief Judge.
Justice M.M Adamu granted the request and directed that the tribunal continue its proceedings at NBA House in Abuja while also prohibiting it from sitting in Benue state.
