Telecom Companies Explain Why Data Consumption Rate Among Customers has Risen in the past few months
Over the past few weeks, Nigerians have taken it upon themselves to report the telecoms companies to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Through various emails and messages sent to the regulatory bodies, they request a probe into high data consumption as they suspect the telecom companies’ foul play.
However, the telecom operators have responded to the probe, stating that the high data consumption is clearly all on consumer behaviors as they have transitioned from 3G to 5G and the rise in video streaming on multiple social media platforms.
This comes after the Nigerian Senate asked the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to work with the telecom companies to evaluate calls and data costs.
Earlier in February, the telecoms increased the tariffs by 50% for all data and call services.
Irate customers have taken to social media to air their grievances and report the telecoms companies to FCCPC and NCC.
One user posted, “Data prices are too high these days. Every Nigerian should report the operators to NCC and FCCPC and send them thousands of emails; otherwise, this price hike won’t stop.”
Another user also posted, “Not only has data become more expensive, but it also seems to deplete faster than before. This is unacceptable.”

The telecom companies are also saying that as the country migrates to 5G connection, it’s expected for data consumption to also be on the rise as there’s more demand for fast internet services.
According to reports from legit.ng, over 2.5 million subscribers have onboarded in just one month despite the high costs of data and calls. This data was culled from the NCC report in February.
