I am dying, ” Woman laments as her face changes shape after botched dental surgery
A mother had an unexpected and painful experience after traveling from the UK to Turkey for dental surgery. Leanne Abeyance went to Turkey to replace her 13-year-old veneers with implants. Unfortunately, she claims that her face collapsed, leaving her in excruciating pain due to poorly executed dental implants.
The 40-year-old says the dentist suggested a sinus lift, bone grafts, and a total of 15 implants—eight on the top and seven on the bottom. After having her teeth extracted and the implants placed, she returned to the UK.

Just two days later, she received temporary teeth. She was scheduled to return to Turkey five months later for her permanent teeth. However, weeks after the screws were inserted, Leanne began to suffer from severe headaches and sinusitis. She panicked when she noticed her face changing shape and rushed to the emergency room, where she was given antibiotics but told there was little they could do. A scan at a private dental clinic revealed that two of the implants had pierced her nasal cavity.
“I’m in the worst pain of my life and constantly going to A&E,” Leanne said. “I can’t even touch my face. It feels like broken glass is being smashed in my face. I’ve been in tears. My face has collapsed, and I don’t have any teeth—just screws sticking out. The pain is worse than childbirth.”

Leanne chose to have the procedure done abroad because it would have cost £40,000 in the UK. The treatment in Turkey was initially priced at £8,000, but she only paid £3,000 upfront, with the rest due after her new teeth were fitted.
She recalled, “When they started removing my teeth, I could feel everything. I had about 25 injections over six hours. The sinus lift felt like they were hammering something up my nose.”
“It was like a horror movie, and I was fully awake. Afterward, I was taken back to a nice hotel where other patients were undergoing similar procedures.
I was on the phone to friends and family, crying because I was in so much pain and all alone. I couldn’t eat because my mouth was so swollen, and there were screws sticking out, so I was starving.”
Leanne left the surgery last May feeling satisfied with her temporary smile, but the pain hit her as soon as she arrived at the airport.
“I had my denture cemented in and was happy, despite the pain. But at the airport, my face started hurting so much that I was buying cups of ice to put on it. My face was black and blue, like I had been in a huge fight. Back in the UK, I thought it was worth it because it was the start of my perfect smile. But four months later, I began experiencing severe headaches, toothaches where I had no teeth, and sinus issues I had never had before.”
“I was constantly visiting doctors and was given antibiotics, but nothing helped. I was hospitalized overnight on an IV drip. Recently, I was in the worst pain of my life, going back and forth to A&E, where they couldn’t do anything.
I went to a private dentist, Droitwich Dental Studio, in March, and they did a full 4D scan of my head. They discovered that one implant had pierced my sinuses and the other was lodged in my nose.”
The mother of two is now fundraising for private treatment. Her dentist has advised that she may need to have all the implants removed and replaced, which could cost £45,000. Leanne expressed, “The pain I’m in is excruciating. It’s not as simple as walking in and walking out with a perfect smile like celebrities claim.
There’s no such thing as a perfect white smile. I’m not looking for sympathy or anything for free. Now, it’s a waiting game. My dentist in Droitwich has been great, and I plan to use them again in the future.”

“I’m ready to have all the implants removed and get dentures, but I hope this will stop the pain. I can’t work; my face swells up, I have severe headaches, nosebleeds, mood swings, and my mental health is suffering. I’ve lost two stone in weight, and I feel like I’m failing as a mother to my two beautiful daughters.”
“I don’t want to be seen in public. My mental health is severely affected; I can’t DJ, I can’t be my happy, lively self, and I can’t even go on a caravan holiday with my kids. It’s been the worst year of my life. I just want it to be over.”
