Students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, IBBU, Lapai, on Monday blocked the Agaie–Lapai highway in protest after a fellow student was killed during a suspected robbery.

It was earlier reported that the victim, identified as Jafar, a 200-level student of IBBU and only child of his parents, was stabbed in the neck by armed robbers who invaded his off-campus lodge in the Ndakikpabu area around 2:30 a.m. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was confirmed dead.

The incident sparked outrage across the university community, with students decrying persistent insecurity around off-campus lodges.

Protest

“The death of Jafar is one too many. We live in fear every night. We want the government and school authorities to act immediately,” a protesting student said.

Police spokesperson in Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the attack, describing it as a case of suspected armed robbery and culpable homicide. He said officers responded to a distress call but arrived after the attackers had fled.

Abiodun added that tactical teams have been deployed to restore calm, while the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full investigation and the arrest of those behind the attack.
