Chaos as PDP crisis persists over NEC meeting

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) crisis continues to worsen as it is currently unsure if its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will proceed as scheduled after being postponed.

This came after Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum decided to restore Senator Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary and convert the NEC meeting into an extended caucus gathering.

Insisting that the NEC meeting proceed, the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Working Committee (NWC) emphasised that the 99th NEC conference had decided that the national secretary conflict will be handled in the subsequent NEC.

They accused Damagum of overstepping his authorities and worsening the PDP crisis.

Sources told newsmen yesterday that this latest development has deepened divisions in the party.

Supporters of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are sticking behind Acting National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo for the time being and Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the long-term replacement, while factions loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike are supporting Anyanwu.

Following a Supreme Court decision in the case of Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu v. Aniagwu Emmanuel & 3 Ors. (SC/CV/18/2025) on March 21, 2025, the disagreement grew more heated.

Despite treating the situation as an internal party matter, the court was unable to resolve the disputes.

Damagum’s move to reinstate Anyanwu and cancel the NEC meeting has angered many PDP leaders, who said the move was against the party’s constitution and undermined NEC’s authority.

“You will hear from us. We are yet to meet. When we meet, you will hear from us,” he said.

Meanwhile, a PDP chieftain, Bode George,  dismissed claims that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, controlled the party.

The BoT has cautioned that such unilateral measures might erode internal democracy and drive the PDP crisis deeper.

He stated:  “The Board of Trustees, being the conscience of the Party, cannot stand idly by and watch the party descend into chaos through acts of impunity, unilateralism, and disregard for constitutional procedures.’’

In order to settle the pdp crisis, the BoT reiterated three important rulings: that Arc. Setonji Koshoedo will continue to serve as acting national secretary; that the 100th NEC conference will proceed as planned on June 30, 2025; and that all members must uphold the party’s constitution as the highest authority.
