Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has received a severe warning from Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo not to enter the state without permission or prior notice.

The warning from Governor Okpebholo is the second time an All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state has warned Obi about visits, including those purportedly for humanitarian reasons.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the governor addressed a group of political supporters and made it apparent that if Peter Obi entered Edo State without formally notifying the state government, his safety would not be guaranteed.

“This message is for the man who claims he has no ‘shishi’,” Governor Okpebholo said, using the local slang for money. “There’s a new sheriff in town. He cannot just come into Edo without informing me. His security will not be guaranteed. If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”

The governor also brought up Obi’s purported N15 million donation from a prior visit. He raised concerns about the funding’s origin, pointing out the discrepancy between Obi’s financial donations and his public declarations.

“He came the other day and gave out N15 million. A man who claims to have no money, where did he get that from?” Okpebholo asked. “After he left, there was unrest in Benin, and three people lost their lives. That’s why I’m saying this: tell Obi not to step into Edo without informing me first.”

This comes after a similar incident in April, when Peter Obi was allegedly cautioned against travelling to Benue State. He was visiting an internally displaced people (IDP) camp at the time that was housing victims of violence committed by herders.
