According to a statement from presidential spokesperson Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President is making a brief stopover in Los Angeles, United States, before proceeding to the Brazilian capital, Brasília, where his state visit is scheduled to commence on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

Recap: A Productive Visit to Japan

President Tinubu’s trip to Japan, which began with his arrival in Yokohama on August 18, was centered around the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9). He actively participated in the summit’s opening and plenary sessions on August 20, using the high-level platform to engage with global leaders.

Promoting Nigeria’s Economic Agenda

A key focus of the President’s visit was to showcase Nigeria’s ongoing economic reform agenda to attract foreign investment. He held a series of high-stakes bilateral meetings with senior Japanese government officials, captains of industry, and key development partners. In these discussions, President Tinubu championed Nigeria as a prime destination for investment, particularly in critical sectors such as infrastructure, technology, and renewable energy.

Engaging the Nigerian Diaspora

Before his departure, President Tinubu held an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Yokohama on Thursday night. He commended their significant contributions to Nigeria’s development through remittances and knowledge transfer. He urged them to continue acting as good ambassadors for the nation while actively exploring the new opportunities to invest back home, created by his administration’s economic policies.

Next Stop, Brasília: Strengthening Ties with Latin America’s Powerhouse

The upcoming state visit to Brazil is aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic ties with a key global partner. The agenda is packed with strategic discussions designed to foster cooperation in areas of shared interest.

Focus on Trade, Agriculture, and Security

Discussions in Brazil are expected to cover a wide range of topics, including:

Trade and Investment: Exploring avenues to increase the volume of trade between the two countries.

Agriculture and Food Security: Collaborating on agricultural technology and food production techniques.

Energy Transition: Sharing knowledge and opportunities in the shift towards cleaner energy sources.

Regional Security: Discussing joint strategies to address regional and global security challenges.

High-Level Meetings and Diaspora Engagement

During his stay, President Tinubu is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and other senior government officials.

A Pattern of Proactive Diplomacy: The Saint Lucia Precedent

This two-nation tour is consistent with President Tinubu’s proactive foreign policy approach aimed at building and strengthening global partnerships. In June and July 2025, the President embarked on a similar diplomatic tour that included a state visit to the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia.

That visit yielded several significant agreements, including:

An agreement for Nigeria to deploy skilled professionals to Saint Lucia through its Technical Aid Corps (TAC) to fill manpower gaps in healthcare and education.

The launch of a scholarship program for Caribbean students to study in Nigeria.

A renewed emphasis on the deep historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean.

The current tour of Japan and Brazil continues this strategy of engaging with key regional powers to advance Nigeria’s national interests on the global stage. President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria upon the conclusion of his engagements in Brazil.
