The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department has confirmed the collapse of foundation of a building in the Garki Area of Abuja with one fatality, leaving two others injured.
This was confirmed in a statement released by the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department on Tuesday by the Department’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa.
According to the statement, Mr. Monday Adie, the head of the FEMD Search and Rescue Team, explained that the collapse happened while the workers were excavating approximately 7 feet of the building’s underground.
“The FCT Emergency Management Department FEMD has commiserated with the family of the victim of a building foundation collapse at an excavation site within the Radio House,Area 8 Garki.
“The incident which occurred at about 5.50pm yesterday, claimed the life of a 25 year old man who was one of the labourers at the site.
“According to the head of the FEMD Search and Rescue Team,Mr Monday Adie, the foundation wall collapsed as the labourers were excavating about 7 feet of the underground of the building,” the statement partly read.

In response to the incident, Acting Director General of FEMD Abdulrahman Mohammed called for strict adherence to safety regulations at construction sites to prevent a recurrence of the regrettable incident.

Adie said that two people were trapped in the rubble of the collapsed Wall, one of whom was rescued alive, and the other of whom was fatally injured.

He also confirmed that the Federal Fire Service received a distress call of the incident at approximately 5.50pm and was quickly mobilised to rescue the trapped individuals.
