President Bola Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council committee to act quickly on policies aimed at significantly lowering food costs nationwide.
This was revealed in Abuja on Wednesday by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.
He claimed that the directive’s main goal is to reduce logistics costs by guaranteeing the safe transportation of farm produce.

“The President has given a matching order with a Federal Executive Council committee already handling it on how we are going to promote safe passage of agricultural foods and commodities across our various routes in the country,” Abdullahi said at a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents.

Since the elimination of the fuel subsidy, high transportation costs, and insecurity on major highways impeded the movement of products, food insecurity has escalated in Nigeria.

Despite government minimal initiatives, food remains largely unaffordable for millions.
According to the minister, Tinubu’s larger idea of food sovereignty—which goes beyond availability to guarantee affordability, accessibility, and nutrition in a sustainable manner—is linked to the strategy.
He supported this by stating that the government plans to implement a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to increase production and a redesigned cooperative reform program to mobilise resources and give rural farmers more authority.

“Mr. President has shown tremendous interest in the cooperative sector as a veritable tool for resource mobilisation, for economic activity generation, and to improve the livelihood of members,” Abdullahi added.
The event, with theme “Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges and Responsibilities,” also featured Senate Media Committee Chairman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu; ex-presidential aide, Senator Ita Solomon Enang; and NILDS DG, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman.
