Free Nnamdi Kanu protest: Sowore condemns police brutality on peaceful protesters

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist, denounced the police assault on them during a nonviolent demonstration calling for the freedom of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB.

Speaking on “Prime Time,” an Arise Television program on Monday, Sowore said that the police targeted them because they were peaceful demonstrators.

He emphasised that if they were bandits, the cops would not approach them.

Recall that Sowore was the primary organiser of the Free Nnamdi Kanu protest that happened on Monday in the Federal Capital Territory, or FCT.

It will be recalled that officers of the FCT police command allegedly shot teargas and live rounds on protesters as they marched, demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“The protest was not only on social media. It happened everywhere around Abuja. We had six spots where we had thousands of people converge en-masse.

“We were at Utako, Gudu, Apo, which has largest crowd, and we moved to the FCT police command where we were tear-gassed ruthlessly.

“Police attacked us because we were peaceful protesters. If we were bandits, they would not come near us.

“Fortunately, we have chosen a no-violence approach to resolving issues but a generation will come that will not accept this nonsense,” Sowore said.
