Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has stated that his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken in the best interest of the state.

Diri made the remark on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa.

According to reports, this was the first time the governor publicly addressed the matter since his resignation from the PDP on October 15.

According to him, while some people may not yet understand his decision to join the ruling party, time will reveal that his motives were selfless and in the best interest of Bayelsa State.

The governor expressed delight over the presence of political leaders from various parties at the Thanksgiving service, stressing that the unity of Bayelsa remains essential for its growth and progress.

Douye Diri, who is serving his second term in office, reiterated that politics should serve as a tool for development rather than a means to destroy or divide people. He assured that his administration would continue to promote unity and drive the state’s advancement.

He further noted that the existing peace, security, and ongoing development in Bayelsa were reasons to be grateful to God, urging citizens to cultivate a spirit of thanksgiving.

Douye Diri said, “Someone had to make the decision to leave the PDP, and I did so on behalf of the state — in its best interest. Some may not understand now, but in due time, it will become clear to everyone.
“When we assumed office, one of our first actions was to complete many of the uncompleted projects we met and initiate new ones. That alone is enough to thank God.
“The peace and security we enjoy today are also reasons for gratitude. Politics should be for development, not destruction. The gathering here today is proof of the unity we share in Bayelsa.”
