Every Nigerian student who has written a research paper knows the frustration: endless hours spent formatting references, double-checking citation styles, and hunting down elusive journal links. For Kamil Bello and Habeeb Lawal, those long nights in the library became the spark for something extraordinary — the creation of Tweakrr, the world’s first AI-powered referencing tool designed to cite and reference academic papers more accurately than a human researcher.
Born out of sheer necessity, Tweakrr represents a leap forward in how students and scholars handle research writing. It doesn’t just automate citation formatting — it intelligently detects missing references, suggests credible sources, and builds a complete bibliography in seconds. What began as a student project in Nigeria’s challenging academic environment has now grown into a globally recognised innovation, showcasing how African ingenuity can solve universal problems.

How Tweakrr Works — and Why It’s Changing Academic Writing
Unlike traditional citation managers, Tweakrr uses advanced machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to understand the flow of academic writing. It reads through a paper, identifies where citations should appear, and then suggests relevant sources from verified academic databases. Once a user reviews and approves, Tweakrr automatically formats everything in APA, MLA, Harvard, or any preferred citation style.
What makes Tweakrr truly different is its intelligence and adaptability. It learns from user input, improves with each paper it analyses, and understands context — for instance, distinguishing between when a sentence needs a direct citation or when it’s a general statement.
“We wanted to build something that actually thinks like a researcher,” says Uche. “The goal wasn’t just to make referencing faster — it was to make it smarter, more accurate, and accessible to everyone, especially students who don’t have access to premium software.”
Beyond students, Tweakrr has found fans among professional researchers and lecturers. Its cloud-based platform allows team collaboration, version control, and shared reference libraries — features that make it ideal for academic departments and research institutions.
Building a Global Tool from Nigeria
Creating a world-class AI system in Nigeria came with serious challenges — unstable electricity, poor internet connectivity, and limited funding opportunities. But for Uche and Tomiwa, these obstacles became lessons in resilience.
“When you build technology in Nigeria, you learn to make it tough and efficient,” Tomiwa explains. “We built Tweakrr to run smoothly even on low bandwidth and mobile devices, because that’s the reality for many African students.”
Early testers — mostly university peers — gave honest feedback, helping refine the tool’s interface and accuracy. That community-driven testing became one of Tweakrr’s strengths. It evolved quickly, built on real-world student experience rather than assumptions from corporate boardrooms.
Funding, however, wasn’t easy to secure. Investors were hesitant about an academic product from Africa competing globally. So, the founders bootstrapped, coded late into the night, and leaned on Nigeria’s growing network of young tech innovators. Today, Tweakrr’s user base extends beyond Africa, with downloads from Europe, Asia, and North America.

Impact on Nigerian Academia and the Future of Research
Tweakrr’s success is more than a tech milestone — it’s a cultural one. It represents a shift in how Nigeria is seen on the global innovation map. No longer just a consumer of technology, Nigeria is producing sophisticated tools that meet international standards.
For academics, Tweakrr brings enormous relief. Dr Ngozi Okeke, a research supervisor at the University of Lagos, notes: “Our students used to spend days fixing citations. With Tweakrr, they focus more on critical thinking and less on formatting. It’s transforming how we teach research writing.”
The platform is also democratising access. Many premium citation tools are priced out of reach for students in developing nations. Tweakrr’s founders introduced affordable subscription models and free plans, ensuring that anyone — regardless of background — can access high-quality academic tools.
And they’re not stopping there. The team is already developing new AI features that can check the credibility of cited sources, detect plagiarism, and recommend more current research papers based on the topic of study. There are also plans to integrate with university libraries and online learning platforms.

A Vision Rooted in Purpose
For Uche and Tomiwa, Tweakrr is more than just a startup — it’s a symbol of what young Africans can achieve when creativity meets determination. “We wanted to prove that great tech doesn’t only come from Silicon Valley,” Uche says. “It can come from Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu — from anywhere a student is tired of losing sleep over citations.”
Their story is inspiring not just because of what they built, but how they built it — with limited resources, limitless ambition, and an unshakable belief in their abilities.
In a world where artificial intelligence often feels impersonal, Tweakrr stands out for its human-centred design. It understands the writer’s struggle and turns one of academia’s most frustrating tasks into a seamless process.
For Nigerian students, it’s a sign that innovation doesn’t have to wait for perfect conditions — it thrives in the face of challenge. For the world, it’s proof that the next big idea in education technology could just as easily come from Africa as anywhere else.
