The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been accused by the civil society organisation Citizens for Secure Nation (CSN) of using the recent school attacks in the states of Kebbi and Niger for political purposes.

Following the Ministry of Education’s decision to close 44 unity colleges in response to an increase in school kidnappings, the ADC blasted the federal government on Wednesday.

However, CSN president Musa Maikawa claimed in a statement released in Kaduna on Thursday that rather than offering significant answers, the opposition party was using worries about national security to inflame public sentiment.

Maikawa claimed that the ADC’s remarks were aimed at undermining confidence in ongoing security operations and efforts.

“We cannot allow a political party to weaponise the pain of grieving families for narrow advantage,” he said.

He further emphasised that the party’s allegations were not substantial and risked eroding trust in security agencies working to combat the crisis.

“There is no justification for painting security forces as collaborators with terrorists. Such rhetoric is dangerous and fuels suspicion at a time when public cooperation is essential,” the statement read.

According to Maikawa, security evaluations led to the temporary closure of schools in impacted areas with the goal of safeguarding pupils.

Additionally, he stressed that fighting violent groups necessitates cooperation and trustworthy communication, and he called on political players to exercise moderation and accountability while speaking on matters of national security.
