The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urgently alerted the attention of Nigerians concerning the circulation of fake Kiss C0ndoms in major markets across the country.
The warning comes amid intensified efforts by authorities to safeguard public health and prevent the distribution of falsified medical products.
Following complaints from MAH-DKT International Nigeria, a prominent non-governmental organisation dedicated to contraceptive social marketing, the warning was issued in a statement distributed via NAFDAC’s X handle on Tuesday, December 30.
The NGO offers family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention solutions that are both safe and reasonably priced.
Markets affected by fake c0ndoms
Onitsha Market, Idumota Market, Trade Fair Market, and a number of marketplaces in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu, and other places have reported finding counterfeit Kiss C0ndoms, according to NAFDAC.
Kiss C0ndoms, a popular male latex c0ndom brand, are widely used to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
How to spot fake Kiss c0ndoms
Three primary distinctions between real and fraudulent Kiss C0ndoms were identified by NAFDAC:
1. Instructions, the manufacturer’s address, storage and caution details, and a clear picture of the condition are all included in authentic packaging. Darker boxes, erroneous addresses, missing medical device specifications, and a lack of cautionary information are characteristics of fake packets.
2. Fakes are darker, carelessly printed with only five lines, and have longer strips than the originals, which are light red with the word “Kiss” precisely inscribed on six lines.
3. Authentic c0ndoms have a larger teat end and proper lubrication. Counterfeit versions are thinner, oval-shaped, and less lubricated, increasing the risk of breakage or failure.
Fake certificates carry significant health hazards, including as breakage, infections, allergic reactions, and inadequate protection against STIs and pregnancy, according to a warning from NAFDAC.
All state coordinators and NAFDAC zonal directors have been directed to remove counterfeit Kiss C0ndoms from marketplaces and maintain stringent oversight.
