Sokoto South Senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has said that elections in Nigeria are not entirely determined by the will of the electorate.

Tambuwal made the assertion on Monday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television.

The former Sokoto State governor explained that irregularities often occur at collation centres, where the actual votes cast by citizens are allegedly distorted. According to him, politicians exploit systemic loopholes, while some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are compromised, undermining the integrity of the electoral process.

“It’s not completely decided by the electorates. I can say that and without mincing words.

“We know quite often times that at coalition level or be it at the polling unit, at the ward level, at local government level, at the state level or even at the national level, things happen that misrepresent what voters actually vote.

“The system is breaking away through the INEC, the court and the politicians because the politicians try to find corners to cut. So wherever there’s a loophole, politicians take advantage of that loophole,” he said.
