Atiku’s son, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, has left the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress, promising to support President Bola Tinubu’s reelection in 2027.

Political circles see the defection, which was revealed on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja, as a significant boost to the APC’s consolidation efforts, especially in the North-East, and a symbolic and strategic blow to Atiku’s presidential ambition.

In what party leaders called a major political realignment, the younger Atiku, popularly known as “Abba,” was formally welcomed by Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, together with important APC leaders from the North-East geographical zone.

Speaking to party leaders and supporters at the gathering, Atiku’s son declared his complete alignment with the APC and announced his resignation from the PDP, calling the decision both historic and very personal.

Additionally, Atiku’s son ordered all coordinators and members of his political organisation, which he established in 2022 under the name Haske Atiku Organisation, to join the APC right once and rally support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said, “My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, but everyone calls me Abba. I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party, where we worked in 2023, and my decision to join the APC.

“Today, I’m here to formally announce my exit from my former party to the APC following the outstanding leadership style and quality of His Excellency, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin.

“With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027. To this effect, I’m directing all coordinators of my association, to join APC and work for President Tinubu.”

Welcoming Atiku’s son into the party, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, described the defection as both symbolic and far-reaching, saying it reflected a new phase of “politics without borders.”

Salihu said, “Today is one of my happiest days. We are looking beyond old social and political cleavages. This young man has seen the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration and decided to align with them.”

Assuring Abba of full rights and equal possibilities within the party, he emphasised that the APC was motivated by ideology and policy orientation rather than personal ambition.

The Deputy Senate President revealed that Atiku’s son returned to Nigeria and decided to join the ruling party after being impressed by the Tinubu administration’s reforms and outreach initiatives. Abba had been attentively monitoring political developments from the United States.
