The Rivers state house of assembly has passed a resolution requesting the state’s chief judge to launch an investigation into the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over allegations bordering on gross misconduct.
In accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), 25 parliamentarians voted in favour of the resolution to send the case to the chief judge for additional investigation during Friday’s plenary.

The governor and his deputy are accused of fiscal irregularities, failing to submit the assembly with the 2026 Appropriations Bill, using public monies without authorisation, withholding statutory allocations to the legislature, and other actions regarded to be grave misconduct.
Speaker of the House Martins Amaewhule, who oversaw the meeting, instructed the clerk to formally write to the top judge within the allotted time to form a seven-person investigating team to look into the allegations.

The development is the next stage of the ongoing impeachment process, which was started on January 8 when Fubara and Odu were served with notices by the parliament.
The lawmakers had launched the process after Major Jack, leader of the assembly, read gross misconduct charges against Fubara, which was signed at the time by 26 legislators.

The majority of lawmakers support Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike, who has been running against Fubara’s reelection campaign after accusing the governor of violating a peace deal they both signed prior to President Bola Tinubu lifting the emergency rule in Rivers.
