The Nigerian Senate is set to pass the 2026 National Budget by March 17
The Nigerian Senate is expected to pass the ₦48.472 trillion 2026 national budget on Tuesday, March 17, for assent by President Bola Tinubu. The development was disclosed by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Solomon Adeola, during a special meeting held on Friday.

Senator Adeola said the consideration of the 2026 national budget estimates at the committee level has been scheduled between February 2 and February 13. He explained that although the Senate initially planned to pass the budget on March 12, he persuaded the leadership to allow an additional week for thorough scrutiny.
According to him, hard copies of the 2026 national budget have already been printed and distributed to chairmen and members of the various standing committees. He also noted that this was done to ensure meticulous examination and detailed consideration of the budget estimates.

Adeola further disclosed that a public hearing on the 2026 national budget proposal would take place on Monday, February 9. He said Wasiu Adeoye, an erudite Professor of Economics from the University of Lagos, would serve as the guest speaker at the event.
He further revealed that Thursday, March 5, has been fixed for an interactive session between members of the committee and key economic managers of the federal government. These include the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, and the Chairman of the National Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji.
The Senate committee chairman added that one week which starts from February 16 to February 23 have been set aside for the submission of reports on budget defence by the various committee chairmen. He said the reports would pave the way for the presentation of the final report to the Senate on March 17 for passage of the 2026 national budget.

Members of the committee adopted the timetable after a motion was moved by Senator Adamu Aliero and seconded by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. The meeting was later adjourned after the adoption of the schedule for the 2026 national budget process.
