Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

The Senate’s clerk, Emmanuel Odo, stated in a notice released on Sunday that the meeting was called by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The notice states that the emergency session will take place in the assembly chamber at noon.

“I am directed by His Excellency, the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, to inform all Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that an Emergency Sitting of the Senate has been scheduled…” the notice read.

“All distinguished senators are kindly requested to note this emergency sitting date and attend.”

The national parliament is under increasing pressure to review article 60(3) of the electoral revision bill, which deals with the electronic transmission of election results, which is why the emergency session is being held.

The lawmakers upheld the electoral act of 2022’s clause allowing for the electronic transfer of election results on Wednesday.

Proposals for a 10-year prohibition on vote purchasers and real-time results transmission were also rejected by the red chamber during the bill’s deliberation; instead, the current penalties of fines or jail time were maintained.

The majority in the Senate supported the bill, nevertheless, as some members of the upper house have explained.

Despite this broad support, the lawmakers kept the current language from the 2022 electoral act, which states that results must be delivered “in a manner as prescribed by the commission,” rather than adopting the real-time transmission of election results that some supporters had favoured.
