Senate Reconvenes Today as Electoral Act Sparks Fresh Uproar

Amid growing public outrage over its handling of modifications to the Electoral Act, especially the contentious decision to remove the language requiring real-time electronic transmission of election results, the Senate will convene an emergency plenary session on Tuesday (today).

Less than a week after the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026 was passed, the extraordinary seating was called in response to growing pressure from opposition figures, labour unions, professional associations, regional leaders, civil society organisations, and a growing youth movement that has expressed its ire outside the National Assembly.

The remaining 105 senators will attend the session, which is anticipated to be chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Recall that emergency session was officially announced on Sunday in a statement signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.

“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026,” the statement read.

Plenary is scheduled to commence at 12 noon.

The decision to reconvene comes amid the backdrop of intense public uproar since the Senate passed the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Amendment Bill, 2026, deleting the phrase “real-time” from provisions dealing with the electronic transmission of election results.
