AFCON 2023 MVP William Troost-Ekong declares, “I am match fit.
William Troost-Ekong, captain of the Super Eagles and MVP of the AFCON 2023, has clarified that he is fully fit and ready to play for Nigeria in the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. This statement was made during a Meet and Greet event in Lagos, where he also unveiled a fans’ jersey for his Foundation match.
Despite being a crucial player in Nigeria’s run to the AFCON 2023 final, Troost-Ekong was omitted from the 23-man squad announced by the new Super Eagles manager, Finidi George, for the World Cup qualifiers. His absence had led to speculation that he was still recovering from an injury sustained during the tournament.
Troost-Ekong addressed these concerns by stating, “They predicted it would take three to four months for me to come back, I came back in nine weeks. I am match fit; I didn’t play in the last games (for PAOK) but that’s up to the coach to decide. But I was back with the team training two weeks before the end.” He reassured fans of his readiness, emphasizing his full recovery and readiness to support the team if needed.
The exclusion of Troost-Ekong from the squad had raised questions among fans, especially given his leadership and performance during AFCON 2023. Finidi George’s decision to leave out the experienced defender from the squad remains a topic of discussion, but Troost-Ekong’s declaration of fitness and availability is a positive note for the Super Eagles’ prospects.
