Night of terror in Zamfara as bandits attack, murder over 50 residents, abduct several more

Zamfara State was thrown into severe mourning on Friday night after it was reported that bandits had killed at least fifty people in Dutsin Dan Ajiya village in the state’s Anka Local Government area.

In a chilling video obtained the victims’ bodies were dressed in white robes in anticipation of a mass burial.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a villager revealed that the bandits, armed with advanced weaponry, broke into the village on Thursday night and fired intermittently.

He added that the terrorists blocked all access roads linking the community to prevent people from running away.

He said, “After blocking all the roads, the bandits started to shoot at sight and the villagers ran helter-skelter.

“After the attack, we realised that 30 people were killed; some were wounded, while several others are at large and nobody knows their whereabouts.”

It was also gathered that the attackers also abducted several residents during the raid which lasted till the wee hours of Friday.

Hamisu Faru, a lawmaker for Bukkuyum South, told the news agency that the assailants burnt down buildings and shot inhabitants who attempted to escape during their raid, which lasted from approximately 5 p.m. on Thursday until roughly 3.30 a.m. on Friday.

Meanwhile,  Sani, a 41-year-old villager, who also confirmed the attack added that the raid claimed the lives of three family members.

Residents reported more than 150 motorcycles conveying the thugs to local officials and security personnel, but they received no assistance, according to Sani.

The attack came a day after the Zamfara State Government donated Armoured Personnel Carriers and a drone to security personnel to fight against banditry and only a day after similar attack was launched in Kebbi, killing at least 33 persons.

At the time of filing this report, the state police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, could not be reached for comment.
