Nigerian singer Simi has recently come under fresh public criticism after disturbing old tweets from 14 years ago resurfaced following trending topic of rape and false accusations.
Netizens have taken to social media to call out Simi over what they described as “shameful” tweets.
In response, the singer has addressed the controversy surrounding some of her old tweets.
She clarified in a post on X that the tweets were sent around 14 years ago when she was 23 years old and assisting at her mother’s creche in an effort to further her musical career.
She claims that she used to tweet openly about her everyday life at the time, including amusing or endearing events involving kids, but she made sure that none of the messages were made with any improper motive.
She added that she has always spoken out against sexual assault and rape and that she cannot permit anyone to distort her tale to fit what she called false narratives.
Simi also disclosed that, despite her initial reluctance, her team has started removing some of the older tweets due to the delicate nature of the matter for her family.
However, despite her clarification, social media users have continued to drag and troll the singer.
