NUJ and TETFund Join Forces to Boost Public Understanding of Education Sector Projects

In a significant development for Nigeria’s education landscape, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) have initiated a strategic collaboration aimed at deepening public awareness of interventions in the country’s education sector. The partnership seeks to improve how the media reports on education programmes, highlight the impact of critical projects, and strengthen accountability in how education funding is communicated to citizens across Nigeria.

This initiative emerged from a vital engagement held in Abuja when leadership of the NUJ paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono. The meeting was more than a formality; it underscored both institutions’ shared commitment to ensuring that Nigerians are well informed about the scale, scope, and outcomes of investments and interventions in tertiary education.

A Strategic Alliance to Elevate Education Reporting

The NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, led his team to the TETFund headquarters, where he articulated the union’s appreciation for the agency’s work in revitalising tertiary institutions across the country. He noted that the union has been consistently monitoring TETFund activities and is impressed with how projects have been executed in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide.

According to Yahya, this partnership is aimed at forging a stronger institutional relationship that will enhance national development through informed public engagement. He said the collaboration will not only help journalists capture the real impact of TETFund’s interventions but also ensure that citizens understand the direction and results of government spending in education.

A key element of this partnership is the proposed joint inspection tour of selected tertiary institutions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This initiative is designed for journalists to independently observe projects supported by TETFund and communicate their findings directly to the public. By enabling firsthand reporting, the collaboration hopes to bridge gaps between project implementation and public knowledge.

Yahya also emphasised the need for structured communication channels between the union and TETFund. He proposed quarterly briefings to provide consistent updates and allow for journalists to offer feedback based on their field observations. This regular interaction is expected to enrich reporting quality, reduce misinformation, and strengthen public trust in education sector announcements.

TETFund’s Perspective on Public Awareness

In response, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono acknowledged that Nigeria’s tertiary education system continues to face significant infrastructure and research challenges that require sustained investment and public confidence. He reiterated that the establishment of TETFund was a response to growing concerns about a decline in academic standards and weakening institutional capacities across higher education.

Echono highlighted that although substantial progress has been made through structured interventions and project execution, more needs to be done to ensure these efforts are seen and appreciated by the public. He explained that increased visibility of TETFund’s work will help sustain trust and reinforce national support for continued investment in education.

The executive secretary pointed out that a significant part of the Fund’s activities involves not just building or rehabilitating physical infrastructure but improving essential services that affect teaching and learning. These include power supply systems, access roads, water provision, and modern academic facilities. He told journalists that communicating these interventions to the public is essential for sustaining confidence in the education sector.

Echono also expressed gratitude to the federal government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for providing ongoing support that enables TETFund to deliver on its mandate. He acknowledged that sustained federal backing has strengthened the agency’s capacity to stabilise tertiary institutions and enhance access to quality education for Nigerian students.

Raising the Profile of Education Interventions

Beyond field tours and regular briefings, the collaboration aims to increase joint public sensitisation efforts through media campaigns. Both organisations believe that better-informed citizens will be more appreciative of the investments being made in the education sector. They also hope that heightened public understanding will encourage greater accountability and support for policies that drive improvements in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Part of this broader strategy includes the NUJ’s request for support towards its 2026 Media Summit in Abuja, which promises to bring together academics, policymakers, and other key stakeholders to discuss issues that cut across education funding and national development. The summit is envisioned as a crucial platform for addressing how media and education sectors can work together to deliver impactful information to the public.

In addition, the NUJ sought support for the International Institute of Journalism, an institution dedicated to enhancing professional standards and improving the quality of journalism practice in Nigeria. The collaboration with TETFund could see opportunities for training and capacity building that will equip journalists to better cover education-related issues, further strengthening the quality of reporting.

The Bigger Picture for Education and the Media

This partnership between NUJ and TETFund comes at a time when the Nigerian education sector continues to navigate challenges related to infrastructure deficits, limited research facilities, and inconsistent funding flows. By promoting transparency and encouraging accurate reporting, both organisations have committed to elevating public discourse around education interventions.

The collaboration is expected to help the media play a more effective watchdog role while supporting TETFund’s mission to restore confidence in the tertiary education system. With journalists equipped to cover education projects more thoroughly and with better access to information, Nigerians can expect clearer insights into how education policies and funding impact learning and institutional development.

As this partnership unfolds, it may also inspire similar collaborations between other government agencies and professional bodies to strengthen public engagement and transparency. With the media as a bridge between institutions and citizens, clearer communication could enhance mutual understanding and progress on national development goals.

In essence, the NUJ and TETFund alliance represents a proactive step towards better-informed citizens, improved education reporting, and greater public trust in how Nigeria’s education sector is supported and sustained. By focusing on open dialogue, direct observation, and joint sensitisation efforts, this partnership could shape the future of education communication and advocacy in Nigeria.
