The member representing Obubra I State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Mr. Ovat Agbor, has been indefinitely suspended over alleged violent conduct.

Although the Cross River Assembly did not disclose the exact nature of the violence, Agbor is reportedly accused of repeatedly assaulting his wife, allegedly linked to excessive drinking and late-night behavior. The House strongly condemned the alleged attacks, describing them as unbecoming of a legislator.
The decision followed a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo during Thursday’s plenary. The Assembly emphasized that Agbor’s behavior violates the ethical standards expected of lawmakers.
Following deliberations, the Cross River House resolved to suspend Agbor from all legislative activities indefinitely. A committee has been set up to investigate the matter and report its findings for further legislative action. Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms in accordance with the House’s directive.
Commenting on the development, Speaker Elvert Ayambem reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining discipline, dignity, and the integrity of the legislature. He stressed that members must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the public trust placed in them.
The suspension remains effective pending the outcome of the Cross River committee’s investigation.

Prior to this action, Cross River Governor Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, publicly rebuked Agbor for his behavior, describing it as irresponsible. Reports indicate that a few weeks ago, Speaker Ayambem personally intervened, rescuing Agbor’s wife from her home at night and taking her to a hospital.
In a statement today, the victim, Glory Agbor, appealed for privacy and revealed her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association, citing misinformation spread by some members, including the speaker’s wife.
“It’s no doubt that some people had tried to paint the name of my family in bad light, but I stand here to vehemently debunk that view against my family, and state it clear here that my husband and I are in peace with each other, even thought issues arose, we have been able to amicablely resolve our differences, like I said, this is my family, and no marriage is totally perfect, please leave my family alone.
“I wish to use this medium to apologize to my dear husband Hon. Ovat Agbor and my entire family over this misconceptions against him. Please forgive me as this will never repeat itself again.”
