As tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, the Federal Government has began evacuating Nigerians who choose to leave Iran, escorting them across the Armenian border to assure their safety.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), revealed the situation in a post on her X handle on Tuesday.

She claims that representatives of the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are helping Nigerians who wish to leave the country and organising the evacuation process.

The evacuees are being transported to the border with Armenia, where safe passage arrangements have been made.

Following a series of coordinated military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel on February 28, worries about the security situation in the region have grown, leading to the evacuation.

Fears of a wider regional confrontation were reportedly raised by the strikes, which prompted retaliatory drone and missile attacks throughout portions of the Middle East.

Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that no Nigerian in Iran has been impacted by the current clashes, despite the growing tension.

She added that embassy representatives are still there at the border to greet and support Nigerians who choose to flee the nation.

“Willing Nigerians being escorted across the Armenian border by officials of the Nigerian embassy in Iran for safe passage. No Nigerian in Iran has been affected by the war as officials remain at the border to receive all who want to leave,” she wrote.

This comes due to the ongoing military strikes between U.S, Israel and Iran.
