Following growing terrorism attacks in Nigeria, the US state department has instructed that all non-emergency government employees and government employee family members leave its embassy in Abuja with immediate effect, due to the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria.
According to an updated travel alert, the clearance was given on Wednesday.
Some northern and north central states including; Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba states were added to the ‘Do not travel’ list “due to terrorism, crime, and kidnapping”.

Following previous attacks in a few states, the modifications were implemented.
Recall that on March 29, gunmen invaded the Gari Ya Waye area of Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, killing more than 20 residents and injuring several others. The attack coincided with the Christian celebration of Palm Sunday.
According to reports, gunmen massacred scores of people in Kebbi and at least 20 in several communities in Niger state on Tuesday.

Others states on the “Do not travel list” Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers are among the other states on the “Do not travel” list.
NIGERIA DIPS IN GLOBAL TERRORISM INDEX
Nigeria was listed as the fourth most dangerous nation in the world in the 2026 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) study.
Nigeria had the biggest increase in fatalities last year, with 43% more attacks than in 2024, according to the index.
82.8 percent of all terrorist killings in the nation in 2025 were caused by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Pakistan was at the top of the rating, with Burkina Faso coming in second and Niger Republic in third.
Meanwhile, some religious leaders have requested that the federal government declare a state of emergency due to insecurity following recent attacks in the nation.
