Anambra Central Senator Victor Umeh has stated that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi did not beg former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi to step down for him ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Umeh made this clarification on Monday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television.
He was reacting to speculations that Obi’s recent visit to Amaechi was aimed at persuading the former Rivers State governor to withdraw from the presidential race.
According to the lawmaker, Obi’s visit was a strategic and respectful engagement, emphasizing that dialogue between political rivals is normal.

“Obi’s visit to Amaechi was a noble one with good intention. You have to talk to your opponent. Saying Peter Obi went to beg Amaechi to step down for him is very condescending. Obi is not someone who will beg you for what he wants, Amaechi knows that,” he said.
Both Obi and Amaechi are members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and are considered potential presidential contenders for the upcoming general elections.
