Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has broken his silence with a daring statement that praised the nation’s control over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and promised to defend its nuclear and missile programs.
“Today, two months following the most significant military deployment and aggression by the world’s bullies in the region, and the United States’ humiliating failure in its objectives, a new chapter is beginning for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” Mojtaba Khamenei stated in a message delivered by a state television anchor.

According to the statement, “new management of the strait will provide comfort and advancement for the benefit of all nations in the region, and economic prosperity will bring happiness to the hearts of the people.” Tehran also promised to protect the Gulf region and end what he called “the enemy’s exploitation of the waterway.”
In reaction to being attacked, Iran has sought to use its control over the strait, the tiny waterway through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil normally passes.

Persian Gulf Day
In a speech commemorating Persian Gulf Day in Iran, Khamenei also affirmed that Iran would “protect its modern technological capabilities – from nano to bio to nuclear and missile – as their national asset and will safeguard it as they do their maritime, land, and air borders.”
Iran will “protect its modern technological capabilities – from nano to bio to nuclear and missile – as their national asset and will safeguard it as they do their maritime, land, and air borders,” Khamenei said in a speech honouring Persian Gulf Day in Iran.
As a postponed declaration of regional sovereignty, his most recent statement suggests that Iran is determined to create a new fee structure in the strait that it would market as beneficial for the whole area.
The Iranian oil industry has been severely hampered by the United States’ counter-blockade, which has been in place since April 13 and aims to stop oil tankers from entering or departing Iranian ports.
