The 2027 presidential candidate and flag bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress(NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has vowed to ensure the release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu if elected president of Nigeria.
Obi also said that the Nigerian government has no reason to detain Kanu due to his insults on Radio Biafra.
Speaking while addressing Nigerians in Washington, the former Anambra State governor promised to dialogue with agitators if elected president of Nigeria.
He said: “There’s no reason for keeping Nnamdi Kanu. I will free Nnamdi Kanu as President, he has done nothing wrong, the government has no reason to arrest him because he was speaking and calling people names on radio, it doesn’t make sense.

“Anybody can tell you anything, I’m a politician and people call me all sorts of names and I don’t think calling me names is an offence, it’s not an offence.
“If I am in government today, I will discuss with all agitators because I believe that they have a reason for whatever they want to do and it’s only by engaging them that we would learn, but I’m not in a position to do anything today.”
Meanwhile IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu is currently serving life imprisonment sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
BACKSTORY…
This comes just days after the United States House of Representatives introduced a resolution calling on the Government of Nigeria to conduct all legal proceedings involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in line with Nigeria’s constitutional obligations and international human rights commitments.
Submitted by Rep. James and dated April 9, 2026, the resolution highlights growing concerns about the treatment of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu remained in custody after authorities controversially transferred him from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021, and a court later convicted and imprisoned him in November 2025.
