The Borno State administration has formally released 3,042 family members, including spouses and children, and 720 repentant members of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.
Brig Gen General Abdullahi Ishaq (retd), the state governor’s special security adviser, made the announcement yesterday at the Disengagement and Reintegration of Low Risk Batch 9 repentant militants in Maiduguri.
Gen Ishaq said the batch includes 720 men, 992 spouses and 2,050 children. He said disengagement and reintegration of repentant armed men is in line with the Borno Model.
He said, “It has been a success story since 5th July 2021 when the good people of Borno State agreed to forgive and accept their sons who are willing to drop arms and embrace peace.”
According to him, the official release of the former fighters represents a critical turning point in the state’s and the northeast’s adoption of the Borno Model’s non-kinetic strategy for combating terrorism.
He further claimed that a call from their peers urging them to give up, embrace peace, and reunite with their parents marked the beginning of their decision and quest to leave the terrorist camps.
Additionally, revealed that the clients had previously left the woods and reported to the closest military site for preliminary profiling; those who had weapons turned themselves in to the soldiers.
BACKSTORY…
Meanwhile, this comes a few weeks after the Nigerian military announced plans to reintegrate over 700 repentant terrorists into society after rehabilitation.
The military disclosed this during a media tour of a new facility ahead of the graduation ceremony.
It also denied claims that beneficiaries of Operation Safe Corridor are being recruited into military institutions.
