Technology, intelligence vital to tackling Nigeria’s evolving security threats – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to investing in advanced technology, intelligence capabilities, and modern combat equipment to address the country’s evolving security landscape.

Oluyede made the statement on Monday during the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) and the African Land Forces Forum held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He said the evolving nature of security threats demands a military that is not only professionally trained but also equipped with cutting-edge technologies capable of addressing the realities of modern warfare.

According to the Army Chief, the Nigerian Army has continued to refine its operational strategies through the modernisation of its capabilities and closer collaboration with other security agencies.

He explained that ongoing military operations, enhanced intelligence gathering and the deployment of modern military assets have strengthened the Army’s campaign against insurgency, terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality.

Oluyede noted that intelligence and technology now play a vital role in military operations, enabling troops to detect threats more accurately, respond faster and execute missions with greater precision.

He added that the Army remains committed to acquiring and deploying sophisticated combat equipment and other operational assets to boost efficiency while improving the safety of its personnel.

The COAS said the modernisation drive also prioritises the training of officers and soldiers to effectively operate advanced military platforms and adapt to emerging security threats.

He disclosed that recently procured equipment would be fully integrated into counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism and other internal security operations across the country.

Highlighting the importance of intelligence-led operations, Oluyede said the increasing sophistication of terrorism and organised crime makes timely intelligence, inter-agency cooperation and the use of emerging technologies more essential than ever.

He also reiterated the Army’s commitment to working closely with the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies to enhance intelligence sharing and strengthen coordinated operations.

The Army Chief stressed that while innovation, intelligence and rapid decision-making are key to modern warfare, they must be supported by professionalism, discipline and strict adherence to ethical standards.

He further appealed to Nigerians to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information that can aid efforts to address insecurity across the country.
