Peter Obi Faces New Petition Alleging Aviation Security Breach

Another petition has been filed against Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing him of traveling with passengers under false pretenses.

On July 12, 2026, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, received the petition, which was also copied to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The petition, submitted by a concerned worker in Nigeria’s aviation sector, called for an urgent investigation into what was described as multiple breaches of aviation security, regulatory compliance, and passenger safety involving Obi and a female passenger.

The petitioner alleges that Air Peace had previously blacklisted the passenger, identified as one of Obi’s media aides, following repeated disruptive behavior and altercations at airports.

According to the petition, Obi reportedly accompanied the woman on several occasions as she continued to fly on the airline under different aliases after the ban was imposed.

It further claims that Obi made arrangements that enabled the passenger to bypass the airline’s restrictions and continue traveling under false identities.

The petition stated, “Despite this restriction, Peter Obi made arrangements repeatedly for this media thug to continue travelling under a different name in order to circumvent the airline’s decision.

“Such conduct by him undermines aviation security, compromises passenger identification procedures, and interferes with our airline’s ability to enforce lawful safety measures.”

‘Obi should think twice next time’ – Keyamo

Reacting to the development in most recent twist, minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development has accepted an offer by one Mr. Nnaemeka Ikerionwu to offset the N25,000 fine imposed on Peter Obi.

Recall that Keyamo previously issued a seven-day ultimatum to the NDC presidential candidate, demanding a public apology to airport officials and pay a N25,000 fine for allegedly breaking parking rules.

However, in a letter shared on X by a public affairs commentator, @Onsogbu, Ikerionwu tendered apology to the Minister and offered to the pay the fine on behalf of Obi.

Backstory…

The latest petition adds to a series of controversies surrounding Peter Obi as preparations for the 2027 general election gather pace.

Since emerging as one of Nigeria’s leading opposition figures after the 2023 presidential election, the former Anambra State governor has remained under intense public and political scrutiny, with his activities frequently attracting legal, political and public interest.

In recent months, Obi has faced criticisms over issues ranging from campaign activities and public engagements to allegations by political opponents, all of which he has consistently denied while insisting that he remains committed to lawful conduct.
