Rabiu Kwankwaso, running mate to Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi, has expressed confidence that the Peter Obi single term pledge will be honoured if he emerges victorious in the 2027 presidential election, noting that both leaders formalised the commitment in a written agreement.
Kwankwaso disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, explaining that their formal agreement requires political power to return to the North following a single four-year term. When questioned on whether Obi’s commitment to step down after four years was non-negotiable, Kwankwaso noted he had no reason to doubt the word of the former Anambra State governor.
When asked if the Peter Obi single term pledge was absolute, Kwankwaso affirmed that he fully trusted the former governor to honour his word.
He said, “Oh yes, I personally believe him and… I don’t think, based on what I now know about him… he will change his mind when the time comes, and we are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper.”
“We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he said.
Speaking further, Kwankwaso addressed his decision to accept the vice-presidential slot after initially seeking the top position, noting that current political dynamics favored a single four-year term for a Southern president before power reverted to the North. When asked about potential presidential ambitions in 2031, he stated that while the party keeps long-term strategy in mind, its immediate priority remains winning the current election cycle.
