Popular Nigerian content creator Habeeb Hamzat, better known as Peller, has sparked reactions online after expressing surprise at the legal implications attached to his statutory marriage with his partner, Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, popularly known as Jarvis.
The couple officially got married in a court ceremony on Wednesday, where a marriage registrar explained the legal responsibilities and consequences that come with their union.
In a viral video from the ceremony, the registrar informed the couple that violating certain marriage laws could amount to bigamy, which carries a minimum prison sentence of five years without the option of a fine.
“If any of you goes against the rule, he or she is guilty of an offence called bigamy. It is a punishable offence with a minimum of five years’ imprisonment, with no option of a fine,” the registrar said before asking if they wished to proceed.
Peller appeared surprised by the warning and questioned why legal consequences were being mentioned during a ceremony based on love.
“This is marriage, love. What concerns love with imprisonment?” the content creator asked.
The moment has since attracted attention from social media users, with many reacting to Peller’s response during the court wedding.
