Nollywood actor and filmmaker Kunle Omisore has claimed that he was once invited to a meeting involving alleged witches to resolve a dispute with one of their members.
Omisore made the revelation during a recent interview on the African A-List Podcast, where he discussed his alleged encounter and his views on the way witches are portrayed in Nollywood films.
According to the actor, he was summoned after one of the alleged members accused him of offending her and damaging something she claimed belonged to her.
He explained that he attended the meeting to present his side of the matter, although he said he did not fully understand the allegation against him.
Speaking about the appearance of witches in Nigerian movies, Omisore said “Witches exist. I have gone to a meeting with witches before and came back to the house. Yes, they invited me. I went to settle a dispute.
“One of them reported me. She said I offended her, and I was summoned. I went to explain my own side of the issue. I don’t really understand the allegation, but she accused me of ruining something that belongs to her.
“And I told their leader that I have never met her before, nor did I ruin anything that belonged to her. I saw many people that were tied there. Some were carrying calabashes on their heads.
“So basically, if I want to shoot a movie with a witch character, I have never seen a witch that paints their face like the one in a Nigerian movie. The ones that I saw wore Iro and a buba dress,” he stated.
Omisore’s comments have drawn attention to the differences between traditional depictions of witchcraft and the way supernatural characters are often portrayed in Nigerian movies.
BACKSTORY:
The portrayal of witches and other supernatural figures has remained a recurring theme in Nollywood, particularly in Yoruba-language films. Over the years, filmmakers have often used distinctive costumes, makeup and dramatic settings to depict witches, occult groups and spiritual encounters.
However, Kunle Omisore’s comments challenge some of these familiar portrayals. During his appearance on the African A-List Podcast, the actor claimed that his alleged encounter with a witchcraft group did not resemble the way such characters are commonly presented in Nigerian movies.
His remarks have consequently sparked interest among entertainment audiences, particularly around how much of Nollywood’s depiction of witchcraft is based on traditional beliefs and how much is shaped by cinematic storytelling.
