The Kano State Government has officially set a new standard for grassroots digital infrastructure. To expand educational opportunities, Kano awards 27.8 billion contracts for ICT CBT centres across all 44 Local Government Areas. This ambitious project aims to bring digital literacy, professional training, and computer-based examination facilities directly to rural communities.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo-Othman, announced the major decision during a contract presentation ceremony in Kano. He emphasized that this initiative represents a decisive turning point for young people who previously lacked access to digital tools.
Backstory: Overcoming Years of Grassroots Educational Barriers
For years, students living outside the state capital faced severe hurdles when taking national examinations like the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Thousands had to travel long distances to urban hubs just to access a computer. In many cases, candidates missed crucial tests due to high transport costs or sudden travel delays.

Recognizing these systemic challenges, Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf made grassroots digital access a core priority of his administration’s educational reforms. This massive infrastructure rollout ensures that rural students can now write national examinations within their own communities.
Technical Specifications and Delivery Timeline
To guarantee reliable performance during critical examination periods, each of the 44 facilities will feature robust hardware and power backups.
The project parameters include:
- Capacity: 300 modern computers deployed per local government area, totaling over 13,000 units nationwide.
- Connectivity: High-capacity internet server networks installed at every site.
- Power Triad: Hybrid energy setup using the national grid, solar power, and heavy-duty backup generators.
- Timeline: Project completion expected within 16 to 18 weeks.
Contractors selected for the build include Odaleg Properties and Constructions Limited, Aytaam Construction Limited, Trusted Development, KODAK PRIME, VIND R&D PARTNERSHIP Limited, and CORNERSTONE CONSTRUCTION & ENGINEERING Limited.
Expert Insights on Long-Term Youth Impact
Beyond simplifying test procedures, local leaders view these centers as vital economic hubs. According to official reports from Vanguard News, Vivid R&D Partnership Limited will serve as project consultant to enforce strict quality control standards throughout construction.
“By bringing ICT/CBT centres to every local government area, we are taking digital opportunities closer to our people and preparing our youth for the future,” Tajo-Othman stated. Furthermore, the initiative will create sustainable local jobs for skilled technical staff who will manage daily center operations across the state.
