Billionaire investor Tony O. Elumelu has seen the market value of his holding in Seplat Energy Plc surge to approximately $1.28 billion. According to equity market data released on September 1, 2026, the Tony Elumelu Seplat Energy stake value expanded significantly after the stock closed at N12,320.60 per share on the Nigerian Exchange.
Elumelu holds 120.4 million shares—representing a 20.07% equity position—indirectly through Heirs Energies Ltd and Heirs Holdings Ltd. This holding positions his conglomerate as the largest single disclosed shareholder in the energy firm. In total, his equity position is now valued at N1.484 trillion, reflecting a N114 billion gain over two months.

Backstory: Transforming a $500 Million Energy Bet into a Multi-Billion Position
The foundation of this growth traces back to December 2025, when Heirs Energies acquired a 20.07% stake from French oil company Maurel & Prom for $496 million. That transaction established Elumelu as Seplat’s primary strategic investor.
Following the acquisition, Seplat completed its integration of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited assets from ExxonMobil. Consequently, daily production increased, boosting investor confidence and pushing stock valuations to record highs throughout 2026.

Strong Financial Performance and Operational Expansion Drive Stock Rally
This market rally rests on solid corporate earnings and expanding operational capacity across upstream assets. In the first half of 2026, Seplat generated N2.50 trillion in revenue, while profit after tax surged to N225.5 billion. Average working-interest production reached 139,509 barrels of oil equivalent per day, supported by higher realized crude oil prices.
Furthermore, Seplat declared a N165.50 per-share interim dividend for the first half of 2026. This distribution consists of a N68.96 core dividend and a N96.54 special dividend. For Elumelu, this single declaration generates a gross dividend payout of approximately N19.92 billion.
“This acquisition reflects our strong belief in Africa’s ability to own, develop, and responsibly manage its strategic resources,” stated Tony Elumelu following the initial transaction announcement.
Board Restructuring and Future Strategic Direction
Elumelu’s growing involvement coincides with significant shifts in Seplat’s corporate governance. Directors’ combined shareholding increased from 1.05% at the end of 2025 to 21.46% by mid-2026, largely driven by Elumelu’s position.
As reported by Nairametrics, Elumelu is expected to assume the role of Board Chairman in January 2027. By combining significant capital backing with long-term strategic oversight, Elumelu continues to strengthen his leadership role within Africa’s evolving energy sector.
