Seriake Dickson, national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said Nigerians could contribute as little as N1,000 to the party’s efforts to raise campaign funds.
Dickson disclosed the fundraising strategy during an interview on Prime Time on Arise Television on Wednesday.
He said the NDC is the only political party in Nigeria that does not receive funding from the government treasury.
“You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires who are now trillionaires using government resources. You will continue to be oppressed.
He said the party was consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council and would soon announce its members.
The former Bayelsa State governor urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other relevant bodies to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
The NDC’s proposal to raise campaign funds through small donations is tied to its attempt to build a grassroots-funded political movement ahead of the 2027 election, rather than relying mainly on wealthy individuals and major political financiers.

Backstory…
Recall that Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign under the Labour Party was driven heavily by grassroots supporters, particularly young Nigerians who organised rallies, marches and online campaigns outside the traditional structures of Nigeria’s two dominant parties. Obi eventually finished third in the election with more than six million votes.
The NDC’s plan to raise campaign funds through small donations of N1,000 and N2,000 is rooted in the party’s attempt to build a different model of political financing ahead of the 2027 election. Instead of depending mainly on a few wealthy financiers, the party is asking ordinary supporters to contribute small amounts that could collectively fund its campaign.
That approach also comes at a time when the opposition is trying to build a national structure capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the APC in 2027. The NDC’s fundraising pitch effectively turns its large grassroots following into a potential source of campaign financing.
