The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) within the premises of the General Hospital in New Bussa, Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The device was reportedly discovered on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at about 11:20am, triggering immediate security response in the area.
A resident of New Bussa told our correspondent that the device was first spotted by security personnel stationed at the hospital. He quickly raised the alarm and alerted conventional security operatives.
The police command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives were immediately deployed to the scene after receiving information about the discovery.
According to the command, the operatives successfully rendered the device safe. They also conducted a thorough sweep of the hospital premises and took the exhibit into custody for further necessary action.
A source revealed that the discovery sparked widespread panic among residents and people in the hospital vicinity.
“Right now, soldiers and police are moving around the hospital. Only patients and one or two of their relatives are allowed into the hospital now. The general population is no longer allowed in,” the source said.
However, the police assured that the situation had been brought under control. Also noting that security around the hospital had since been beefed up. The command further stated that normalcy had been restored in the area.
As of the time of this report, the command has not disclosed or discovered the identity of whoever planted the device. The possible motive behind the incident has not yet been found, as investigations into the matter continue.
Security agencies are yet to release further updates on whether any suspects have been identified or apprehended in connection with the discovery.
