2027: Obi Will Quit Presidential Race If Anambra Debt Claims Are Proven — Tanko

Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has said Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), will honour his pledge to quit the 2027 presidential race if evidence shows that he left debts or other financial obligations after leaving office.

Tanko made the claim during an interview on Arise TV on Friday while responding to questions about allegations surrounding Obi’s financial record as governor of Anambra State.

During the interview, Tanko was asked whether Obi would withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if evidence showed that he left debts behind.

Tanko said Obi had consistently stood by his statements and would accept responsibility if the allegations were proven.

“My principal has always owned up to his own word anytime, any day,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abia State governor, Alex Otti has also lent his voice to the ongoing issue, stating that Peter Obi left about $155 million in investments and cash assets for the state.

Backstory…

The immediate backstory is a growing dispute between former Anambra governor Peter Obi and the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo over what Obi actually left behind financially when he left office in 2014.

The controversy began after Anambra Commissioner for Finance Izuchukwu Okafor said the Soludo administration was still servicing loans and other financial obligations inherited from previous governments, including Obi’s administration. Obi rejected the claim, saying he left office without outstanding salaries, pensions, gratuities or certified contractor debts.

Obi then raised the stakes on September 15, saying that if anyone could prove he left debts behind, he would stop campaigning for the presidency in 2027.

He also disputed a claim concerning about ₦2.1 billion in ecological funds, saying the money had been released shortly before he left office for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis and remained untouched in a First Bank account.
