Nigeria’s has made history after successfully completing its first Tele-Robotic Surgery by Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) in collaboration with RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a surgeon operating a Toumai control console at RHV performed real-time surgery on a patient located at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja.
The procedure, a robot-assisted remote right radical nephrectomy, was executed to remove a cancerous tumor from the patient’s kidney.
Tele-Robotic Surgery, commonly known as remote surgery, utilizes advanced technology to enable a surgeon to perform surgical procedures on a patient from an entirely different geographic location.
Prof. Obi Ekwenna-Davis, a professor of urology and transplantation who led the procedure at RHV, provided an update on the patient’s post-operative condition.
He stated that the operation demonstrated the feasibility of safely performing telesurgery on patients across different regions of Nigeria and globally.
Ekwenna-Davis, who is also the Co-Founder of RoboMed Global, described the milestone as a major achievement for RHV and its partner organizations.
“Distance should never decide who receives safe surgery; this is what safe and trusted surgery looks like,” he said.
The US-trained surgeon confirmed that the patient is recovering well and is expected to be discharged within 24 hours.
He added that the procedure lasted approximately three hours, including brief pauses to ensure all systems and equipment functioned properly.
Ekwenna-Davis noted that the partnership marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time two hospitals located in different regions of Nigeria successfully collaborated to perform a surgical procedure on a patient.
Meanwhile, speaking on his part, Dr. Adedamola Dada, Chief Executive Officer of RHV, stated that the milestone represented the first tele-robotic surgical procedure conducted in West Africa.

The development gathered pace in 2025, when Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja began operating as a robotic-surgery centre.
The hospital said it had been providing robotic surgery services since November 2025, laying part of the groundwork for the latest cross-city procedure.
In January, The Prostate Clinic in Lagos reported a robotic gynaecological operation that removed two ovarian tumours from a patient.
