Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the Youth Wing of the Labour Party has proposed forming an alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and political organizations supporting President Bola Tinubu.
The proposal was outlined in a statement signed by Edo State Labour Party Youth Leader Ken Omusi and published on the party’s official X handle on Saturday. The resolution followed a virtual meeting led by National Youth Leader Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, alongside five zonal youth leaders and 32 state youth leaders.
According to the statement, the Friday meeting addressed youth engagement strategies for the upcoming 2027 polls and examined the party’s direction amid an ongoing internal leadership crisis.
The youth leaders reportedly instructed Ahanotu to open formal discussions regarding possible political alignment and collaboration with the All Progressives Congress, the Renewed Hope Movement, the City Boy Movement, and affiliated Tinubu Support Groups.
The statement read, “During the meeting, several youth leaders expressed concerns about what they described as inadequate recognition, total negligence, lack of engagements and no support for the youth constituency during and after the 2023 general elections where they laboured in vain for a presidential candidate who lacked the skills to consolidate.
“They emphasised the need for a political platform and leader that would provide greater opportunities for youth participation, leadership development, economic empowerment, and inclusion in national decision-making.
The statement further noted that the proposed political alignment will undergo further review following preliminary talks with stakeholders, with youth leaders recommending an in-person meeting in Abuja to evaluate consultation outcomes and determine their next line of action.
Concerns over inadequate recognition
Participants raised concerns regarding what they described as inadequate recognition, inclusion, and support for the youth demographic during and following the 2023 general elections.
The discussion covered key policy initiatives of the Tinubu administration, including human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, national security, agriculture, and labor welfare. According to the statement, attendees expressed varied perspectives on these policies and their overall impact on national development.
The proposal emerges amid broader political realignments and cross-party movements ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Labour Party youth leaders emphasized that the suggested engagement remains an ongoing deliberation, with any final decisions contingent on further consultation and consensus-building.
Backstory…
Ahanotu won the presidential, governorship and House of Representatives primaries in May 2026, emerging as the leader of the faction led by Julius Abure. Another faction further exposed the party’s divisions by presenting Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate.
According to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Labour Party emerged as a major opposition force in the 2023 presidential election, with its candidate, Peter Obi, securing 6,101,533 votes to finish third behind the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The party also won the Abia State governorship and secured seats in the National Assembly in the 2023 elections, strengthening its position in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
