When an Attack Becomes an ‘Altercation’: Omoyele Sowore’s Ekiti Ordeal Raises Questions About Police Narratives

The circumstances surrounding the reported attack on human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in Ado-Ekiti have raised fresh questions about police accountability and the treatment of political activists in Nigeria.

Sowore was reportedly attacked by some individuals at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti on Friday, October 30, 2026. While initial reports suggested that he had been abducted by armed men, the Ekiti State Police Command dismissed the kidnapping claims, saying he was rescued by officers after an altercation with some individuals. The police also confirmed that he sustained injuries and was receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.

However, Omoyele Sowore has strongly challenged the police account, insisting that neither he nor his team participated in an altercation. According to him, they were victims of a violent attack, and describing the incident as a minor confrontation was an attempt to downplay its severity.

He also claimed that the Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, personally witnessed the injuries sustained by members of his team.

Sowore and the Nigerian Police: A Long History of Confrontation

The latest disagreement is another chapter in Sowore’s long-running confrontations with the Nigeria Police Force, particularly over protests, arrests and the exercise of citizens’ constitutional rights.

The activist, who gained national prominence through his activism and the Sahara Reporters platform, has repeatedly accused the police of intimidation and suppressing dissent.

In November 2025, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh declared Sowore wanted after he joined a protest against demolitions in Oworonshoki, Lagos. Sowore challenged the action in court, and in February 2026, the Federal High Court ruled that the declaration was unconstitutional, awarding him N30 million in damages against the police authorities.

Against this background, the Ekiti incident carries significance beyond the injuries reportedly sustained by Sowore and his team.

The police have promised an investigation to establish what happened and identify those responsible. Nigerians will now be watching to see whether that investigation produces clear answers.

Ultimately, the issue is not whether Sowore has a history of disagreements with the police. It is whether every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, can move freely without fear of violence or intimidation.
