Today’s US midterms are widely viewed as a referendum on Donald Trump’s second presidential term and a key opportunity for opponents to curb his executive authority.
With majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives currently held by Republicans, both parties have launched final campaign pushes to win over voters.
The outcome will determine congressional control and dictate whether Trump’s extensive application of executive authority faces institutional checks for the remainder of his presidency.Speai
Trump has anchored the Republican campaign, addressing numerous rallies nationwide and urging his Make America Great Again (MAGA) base to support party candidates as if he were on the ballot himself.
Speaking earlier at a news conference focused primarily on the troubled renovation of Washington’s Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Trump said,
“We’ll defend our country, our culture and our heritage for generations to come”. “We’re gonna keep it the way it is. We’re going to make it better and just.”
Additionally, Trump criticized Democrats, characterizing them as dangerous and extreme while alleging that they harbor hostility toward the country.
Democrats vs Republicans
Fueled by rising fuel prices, persistent inflation, and public opposition to the ongoing conflict with Iran, Trump’s approval ratings have dropped, forcing Republicans onto the defensive throughout a volatile campaign cycle.
Simultaneously, Democrats have confronted internal disruptions, notably a late-stage rift in a competitive Michigan Senate race, where former primary candidate Haley Stevens publicly endorsed Republican challenger Mike Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
However, polling indicates that Democrats are positioned to capture the House of Representatives, where securing a net gain of three seats would yield a slim majority.
Control of the Senate remains far more uncertain, making the Michigan race vital to Democratic efforts to secure the four net seats needed to take the chamber.
To gain that Senate majority, Democrats would also need to prevail in states such as Maine and Alaska, where Trump’s controversial trade dispute with Canada has emerged as a central campaign issue.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials confirmed to CBS, the BBC’s American partner, that the United States initiated military strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz ahead of the US midterms.
Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, reported multiple explosions across the island on Monday.
According to U.S. officials, the limited strikes were launched after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted an American aircraft. BBC has contacted U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees operations in the Middle East, for official comment.
