Opposition groups have dropped the “G100” label in favour of the “Coalition for Democracy” as they step up efforts to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
The coalition announced the name change in a statement issued by co-convener Salihu Lukman following a meeting of its Central Leadership Committee in Abuja on Thursday.
According to the group, the new moniker reflects a shared commitment among its members to protect constitutional democracy, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the fundamental political rights of Nigerians.
The alliance was established following the inaugural Opposition Summit held in Abuja on August 31, 2026, which convened several political entities, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Additionally, the coalition issued a fresh warning to both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The group asserted that the APC is progressively shrinking Nigeria’s democratic space and engineering an electoral system that exclusively benefits the governing party while systematically putting opposition parties at a disadvantage.
Backstory…
Remember that the group was formed following the first Opposition Summit, which took place in Abuja on August 31, 2026, and brought together a number of political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Additionally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) received a new warning from the alliance.
It said that the APC was gradually restricting Nigeria’s democratic space and creating an electoral system in which the ruling party is the only one with advantages that are purposefully denied to the opposition.
